It is strange for me to be writing this, with what feels like some emotion. Last night I saw the Coen brothers latest movie No Country for Old Men. Now I should explain that I love art movies. I like films that use the camera lens to explore exactly our way of perceiving things. I had heard some reviews about this film on TV and was looking forward to watching the film. No Country for Old Men received eight Academy Award nominations and won Golden Globe Awards for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role and Best Screenplay. This should make the movie rather enjoyable at least worth watching.
I remember back in the nineties when Pulp fiction came out. It really was at that moment quite a different film. All about killing and drugs but what I remember most about the film was how Quentin Tarantino had put all the pieces in the film into a random order. It was brilliant….. even if you did not like blood and guts the film made you think. Now the Coen brothers have made a really well shot film, but it seems that its only appeal is to the mass murder. We have countless film footage, really well shot of people getting their brains blown out by a captive bolt pistol, Which is great if your studying medicine or just really like watching killers. So far as I could see our main man just likes to kill and if he is ever in doubt he tosses a coin. Yes it is well filmed, do we really want to watch killers, do people like Chigurh really exist? More importantly even if the answer is yes to these questions. I found it hard to believe even in Dallas that you can randomly kill anyone as you walking down the streets. ( After thought - didn’t they kill JFK there) It seems to be the stuff of Hollywood and American films like Rambo. Maybe I am missing something but why would I want to watch it again?
